Gutter Cleaning Tips from D&H Window Cleaning

Tips from a Michigan Gutter Cleaning CompanyBeing a homeowner means having to do regular tasks that keep your property safe, valuable, and presentable. Cleaning out the gutters is probably one of the most dangerous chores a homeowner has to tackle. It’s no fun, but it is very important. The buildup of natural debris combined with frequent precipitation can lead to a nightmare outside and inside your home. A task such as this should be left to a professional cleaning company. In case you’re thinking about tackling it yourself, here are a few gutter cleaning tips to keep in mind.

1. Clean Your Gutters Twice a Year

The good news is that you should only clean your gutters twice a year. When spring rolls around, take the time to look through your gutters and see which ones need some serious cleaning. The weather from fall and winter can leave quite a heap for you to clean. Then, repeat the process in early fall. The storms in spring and summer can either bring in debris or a lot of water, which is why your gutters should be cleared out so they can do their job. The first step is to check up on those gutters and see if the task is something you’re capable of.

2. Be Careful Going Up

It cannot be stressed enough how important it is to know how to use a ladder correctly. Once you’ve ensured the base of your ladder is sturdy, climb to the top and do not hold on to the gutter. It’s better if you have a partner holding the bottom of it to make sure it stays in place. Gutters are not meant to hold the weight of a human being, let alone a ladder. Always lean your ladder on a solid surface rather than the gutter. As you climb to the top, check the ladder’s stability and find a position where you’ll be able to stand and clean out the gutter at the same time. Do your best to keep your weight forward so you don’t tip over backwards with the ladder.

3. Get Your Supplies

If you’ve made sure that the ladder is secure and this task is something you can handle, you’ll now have to prepare the tools for the job. Here are a few items you should have:

• Gloves
• A tool that can scoop and hook out debris
• A bucket that can hang on your shoulder and hold the debris

The gloves will protect you from the gutter’s sharp edges and any dirty or moldy material that may be hanging out. Make sure you’ll be able to have a good grip on your tools and access to your bucket. You can either place it on top of the roof or hang it on the ladder.

4. Get to Cleaning (Carefully)

Cleaning out the gutter can be quite a workout. While you’re scooping and collecting, your reach will only go so far. You’re going to need to climb up and down the ladder frequently. Don’t let the weight of the debris in the bucket risk your safety. Have a trash bag available when you’re climbing down so you can just dump it out. Once a good section of your gutter has been cleared, give it one final rinse with the garden hose, which you should be very careful handling.
